The Tilefather has always experimented with ceramic tile products.
The Tilefather has always experi- mented and innovated with ceramic tiles ever since he started importing ceramic tiles as early as 1954. He may have been the first; to inject dyes and glitter to grout, established the quarter round molding as a ceramic tub kit, china paint and decals on ready glazed ceramic products. And so it was during the year of 1984, as he was in the process of opening another showroom in Broomall, Pa., that he attempted another experiment. So he called up a friend of his who was an artist by the name of Joe Abbonizzi. After a long discussion about the dos, donts, and cants with ceramic tile the two of them discussed the idea of painting a wall from floor to ceiling. The tile a 41/4 x 41/4 light blue was highly glazed. They agreed that a basic white latex paint would be best suited as a
base. By the end of the following day Joe had painted a beautiful fully
scaled colorful country scene that stayed unblemished on that wall for a
period of more than ten years. The point here is that there are many
questions about the use of paint over ceramic tile. The main one being
will it hold up? And the Tilefathers' answer to that is yes. There are a
lot of issues that come up about painting the edges of tiles, or
finding replacement tiles. The proper choice of paint on ceramic tile
is an issue and by painting over ceramic tiles in most situations would
be a solution to solving a lot of problems.
| EXPERIMENT WITH CERAMIC TILE LISTELLOS OVER PAINTED WALLS
A ceramic listello is a border that is manufactured in various sizes. It is generally placed in combination with a ceramic field tile. The main purpose for its use is to enhance the ceramic field tile and to draw attention to the peripheral area of vision. Most field tiles can be installed with or with out a listello, but it would appear uncommon for a listello to be installed as a main feature. This is not the belief of the Tilefather. He states that you can use a listello anywhere in any room on any type of wall that is fairly flat and structurally sound. Any room that needs a little cosmetic surgery would be a great candidate for a listello lift. Just to mention a few ways that it can be utilized;
as a chair rail, baseboard, room divider, back splash , or as a
highlight around windows and doors. Surely there are a hundred more ways
that a listello can find a home. There are a few methods of installing
the listello with out the presence
of the field tile. The easiest is to paint over the edge with matching
paint from above and below.
Of course there are many different styles that are acceptable. That
is exactly why a listello could be adaptive as well with choice molding
instead of painted edges. If you have read this far then most likely you
would be interested in viewing how a listello is installed by visiting
our navigational index. Exposed edges of any ceramic product can easily
be installed with expensive and inexpensive molding trim. It's a great
way to emphasize a doorway or a window
frame. Moldings are also available in brass, stainless, and annodized
gold. Listellos can be installed with double faced tape, mastic or thin
set.
If you have a tub surround that needs a lift then a listello may be your
answer.

To mention some possiblities as follows; trim around wall mirrors, over drab bathroom wall tile , on plastic tub surrounds as a focal border, on wall paper , melamine wallboard , painted sheetrock, as a water seal between tub and wall, over bathroom ceramic trim of the 40's and 50's, as baseboard molding in any room.
